Ah! what avails my strife,
My wandering to and fro?
Thou hast the words of endless life;
Ah! whither should I go.
I know, I know, such antiquated language, but it reminds me of Sunday's word: concupiscence. The desire to grasp and consume everything. Wesley speaks truthfully of this human condition. What good is it doing me to wander to and fro? If God has the words of life, where else could I possibly go?
I find myself wandering to and fro quite often, both literally and figuratively. Literally and physically moving about, seeking to find a place that suits, like Goldilocks looking for the "just right" chair. And figuratively as my soul seeks rest in so many places other than the feet of Christ. It is, I think, my greatest challenge as a student of Jesus: remembering in my wandering that there is only one place to seek the words of life.
Where else would we go?
