Children Learning Important Prayers and Scriptures
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9
WHAT IS CLIPS-
Knowing the word of God by heart is so important in today’s world. These words will help guide our children and lead them in the path they should go- the path of truth. CLIPS, Children Learning Important Prayers and Scriptures, was designed so that parents can work with kids on special prayers, scriptures and other religious material that will help lead them in their faith journey. Kids are only at church a few hours a week, and during this time, we do learn important prayers and scriptures. However, one of the lessons CLIPS tries to teach is discipleship at home. When parents and kids work together to learn these CLIPS, kids (and adults alike) can learn that God’s words are important not just at church but at home, at school and in everyday life.
WHAT DO KIDS GET FOR LEARNING CLIPS? -
Kids like to be rewarded for learning. Kids can earn beads to go on a key ring for learning CLIPS. Some items are designated as core items which can be said for a “large” bead and other scriptures can be said for a “small” bead. Recently we have added that kids can say ANY Bible scripture for a small bead as many kids have learned scriptures through school, church or home study. (If a large amount of scripture is said a big bead can be earned.)
WHEN CAN CLIPS BE SAID?-
CLIPS are said in the time between Sunday School and Church (9:30-9:50) in room C4. There is a notebook where the day and item said is recorded by the adult (not the child’s parent) that listens to the child recite the CLIPS. Kids can then place the bead they have earned on the key chain that stays on the bulletin board. If you would like to volunteer to be someone that listens to the children, please ask! It is a wonderful – and easy—way to share in the learning of God’s word with our children!
CLIPS IN THE NEWS-
We were excited to have CLIPS mentioned in an article in The Interpreter, the national United Methodist magazine. Children’s programs from across the country have inquired about CLIPS to use in their own church! See the online link! http://www.interpretermagazine.org/interior.asp?ptid=43&mid=14423
CORE CLIPS
Items that can be said for a big bead.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.
Ten Commandments
Kids just have to get the idea of each commandment when they recited it- not exact scripture text!
I am the Lord your God, You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make false idols.
Do not take the Lord’s name in vain.
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
Honor your father and mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor (or lie).
You shall not covet.
John 3:16
We want this simple but powerful scripture to be a “big bead item” as it is so important, but easy that even our younger kids can learn it! Suggested Bible versions are the NIV or KJV. If the child learns a different one, please bring that Bible translation or paraphrase when reciting.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)
The Doxology
Kids can either say or sing this song of praise.
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
The Twenty Third Psalm
Suggested Bible versions are the NIV or KJV. If the child learns a different one, please bring that Bible translation or paraphrase when reciting.
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (KJV)
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever. (NIV)
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

Any Large Amount of BIBLE Scripture.
Some of our children are asked to learn large amounts of scripture (ex. Hebrews chapter 3) for school or it can be done on their own! We want to reward this learning of God’s word with a large bead. The child should bring in the Bible they have used to learn this scripture, so that the listener can follow along with this version as the child recites the Word.
INDIVIDUAL CLIPS
Items that can be said for a small bead.
PARENT NOTE: Older kids are asked to say the entire scripture while younger kids or kids with learning disabilities are allowed to say the version below in bold print. If a child wants to say the verse in a different Bible translation or paraphrase than the suggested one listed, they are asked to bring in that Bible so the listener can follow along.
Genesis 1:1- In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Exodus 20:12- Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

1 John 4:7- Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
Any BIBLE Scripture-
The children are encouraged to learn any scripture for a small bead. Please bring the Bible the child has used to learn it, so that the adult may follow along as the child recites. Younger children and children with a learning disability are allowed to learn a shortened version of a scripture that gives the “heart” of the verse.
